DNA Testing

From dogs and cats to horses and birds, DNA testing is now more popular than ever in San Antonio. Within the last four years, the number of companies that provide animal DNA testing has increased.  DNA testing is not just for determining dog/cat breeds, it can be used to determine the sex of a bird, to determine if a purebred dog will develop genetic specific diseases or it can determine the coat color/pattern of horse offspring.

There are two different types of DNA testing, swab based and blood based. The “at home” kits/tests that are purchased at pet stores and available to owners via internet are swab based.   Those tests available through your veterinarian are usually blood based.  Both types of tests offer similar results, however the blood based tests are considered to be more accurate.

Our clinic uses Royal Canin’s Genetic Health Analysis DNA test. It is a blood based test that compares your dog’s blood sample against 320+ genetic markers.  The markers include genes linked to specific health conditions as well as genes associated with over 250 different breeds.  This DNA test also screens for 13 different genetic mutations that can predict future health problems.
